Fluentgrid’s Actilligence in God’s Own Country

|

Fluentgrid scored yet another significant win to setup an Integrated Command, Control and Communication Centre (ICCC) solution for Cochin (aka Kochi) smart city. Fluentgrid is the Master System Integrator for this prestigious project in Kerala; the tourist haven of India, popularly known as God’s Own Country. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a public sector aerospace and defence electronics company, is our consortium partner for the project.

Called the Queen of the Arabian Sea, Kochi was an important spice trading centre on the west coast of India, since 14th century. The 440 sq.km. city Kochi metropolitan region is home to about 2.1 million people. Kochi ranks first in the total number of international and domestic tourist arrivals in Kerala. The city was ranked the sixth best tourist destination in India, one of the 28 Indian cities among the emerging 440 global cities that will contribute 50% of the world GDP by the year 2025, the topmost emerging future megacity in India (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kochi).

A year ago, Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) embarked on an ambitious journey towards transformation of its core ICT infrastructure under Smart City guidelines. Cochin Smart City was one among the forerunners that were selected in Indian Smart City Mission’s Top 20 contenders. The August 2018 floods in Kerala delayed the whole process. However, the city turned out to be very resilient and the projects were soon put back on track.

Fluentgrid proposed a well-integrated technical solution on cloud and followed it up with a fully integrated demonstration on site that won appreciation from the project evaluation team and other stakeholders. The smart work and dedication by able team members coupled with experience and business acumen of team leaders helped us win the project.

The project involves setting up an Integrated Command, Control and Communication Centre (ICCC) with complex integrations to various smart elements and applications in the city. GIS and Project Management services along with ICCC build are other key components of the project. Fluentgrid will deploy its popular Actilligence for Cities platform to implement the ICCC solution for Kochi.

Fluentgrid’s cloud based billing solution for UP DISCOMs is now a case study under UDAY Scheme

|

The cloud hosted billing and customer care solution for UP DISCOMs, implemented by Fluentgrid using its own CIS product suite, has now become a case study under the UDAY Scheme of Government of India. The case study published on the UDAY website (Read it here: https://www.uday.gov.in/cs/c1 ) details about how the cloud solution helped achieve 5.89% reduction in AT&C losses due to increased billing and collection efficiency.

According to the case study, users of the solution implemented by Fluentgrid feel that the cloud-based system is user-friendly and easy to adopt. They also share that the system is easy to learn and enables them to undertake the following more effectively – Bill generation, collection, bill revision, permanent disconnection, allocating a new connection, and meter replacement.

This project is unique as it is a zero CAPEX project that does not involve any upfront investment on IT & Communications infrastructure or software licenses or implementation costs. The DISCOMs only pay a monthly fee per consumer as long as they use the cloud solution that comes with stringent SLAs. Zero CAPEX IT projects on Pay-as-you-go model are a boon for cash strapped DISCOMs to achieve a turnaround without new investments.

The project had also set implementation benchmarks for CIS projects of this nature with each DISCOM going live in just about 6-8 months and the overall implementation for all four DISCOMs going live in 11 months flat. At the time of going live, total consumer base was about 12 million which has now crossed 17 million mark due to rapid electrification in the state. The UPPCL cloud solution thus becomes the world’s largest such utility CIS solution delivered on 100% OPEX model.

The project also stood a winner in DCD Awards India and APAC rounds and became the global finalist in the category Cloud Migration of the Year 2018. DCD Awards are considered the Oscars of data center industry. Fluentgrid’s CIS suite is positioned on the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Utilities Customer Information Systems for the sixth consecutive year since 2013.

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is the power transmission and distribution utility of the largest state in India. Fluentgrid’s cloud hosted utility solutions was implemented for 4 of its 5 DISCOMs – DVVNL, MVVNL, PVVNL, and PuVVNL. This project was implemented to cover the rural consumers under Non-RAPDRP regions of these DISCOMs under Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) of Government of India.

The Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme launched by Government of India aims to achieve financial turnaround of Indian state-run power utilities through operational improvements, reduction of losses, energy efficiency, etc., We feel elated that the UDAY administration selected our UPPCL cloud solution on OPEX model as a case study for other DISCOMs in the country.

NDMC becomes the first Indian municipality to go for 100% smart metering

|

When India’s Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy Mr. R.K. Singh launched the New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) smart metering project on 9th Jan 2019, it became the first municipality in India to achieve 100% smart metering.

The project replaced 50,000 conventional electricity meters with smart meters in the NDMC area. NDMC will benefit from enhanced consumer satisfaction resulting from better complaint management, faster restoration of outages, awareness of optimised consumption pattern, and improvement in system stability, reliability and transparency.

The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution fetches instantaneous meter readings and load profile data from smart meters and makes it available to billing and analytics applications after thorough validation. Automated remote meter reading helps NDMC save on reading costs and eliminate associated errors in meter reading and billing, thereby improving billing efficiency.

Other advantages of AMI include anytime, anywhere access to meter data and critical events such as meter tampering. NDMC will also be able to disconnect and reconnect electricity supply remotely. NDMC consumers can view their energy usage pattern and take necessary decisions to save on energy using NDMC’s web or mobile apps.

This is a significant step towards converting all the 250 million power meters in India into smart and prepaid meters by 2022, in line with the National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) of the Government of India.

Mr. Singh said, “Smart Meters will revolutionize the power sector through their vast cascade of benefits including reduced AT&C losses, better health of DISCOMs, incentivization of energy conservation and ease of bill payments. Further, this move will generate skilled employment for the youth.”

The facility was inaugurated by Mr. Singh, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Mr. Anil Baijal; Secretary, Ministry of Power Mr. A K Bhalla; NDMC Chairman Mr. Naresh Kumar, and EESL MD Mr. Saurabh Kumar.

Fluentgrid’s CCC helps Vizag withstand and quickly recover from the Cyclone Phethai

|

Life in the port city of Visakhapatnam in southern India, where Fluentgrid is headquartered, was thrown out of gear when cyclone Phethai hit the city on December 17. As the situation in Visakhapatnam normalizes, it’s relieving to note that the city’s Command and Control Centre (CCC) implemented by Fluentgrid using its smart city platform Fluentgrid Actilligence™ for Cities played a major role in monitoring the movement of the cyclone, disaster management and rehabilitation activities 24/7 undertaken in various areas of the city.

Collage-vizagg

The CCC was implemented after the devastating Hudhud cyclone hit the city in 2014, as part of the government’s initiative to deploy an operations center equipped to provide integrated management for a range of city services. Safety being one of the priority areas of the CCC, closed-circuit television cameras installed across the city for critical surveillance and Smart Poles at major junctions in the city were integrated to be operated from the center.

During the cyclone Phethai, surveillance cameras monitored uprooted trees, road blockages, and water stagnation in many areas, and alerts were sent out through the Smart Poles. Fluentgrid has formed a team of experts that monitors the city from the CCC and issues timely alerts to government entities responsible for respective city infrastructure. The monitoring team reported the cyclone situation to the Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). Based on the inputs from the team, the Commissioner appointed nodal officers from various departments who were in constant touch with the monitoring team to stay updated about disaster management priorities and send teams to locations that needed immediate intervention. The Commissioner praised the monitoring team’s efforts during and after the cyclone.

Other city functions integrated with the CCC are street lighting, air quality monitoring, bulk water supply, solid waste monitoring, and green cover monitoring. Implemented by Fluentgrid as part of Visakhapatnam’s proactive measures to become a smart city, the CCC is part of the city’s initiative to enhance preparation for disaster management, sanitation and health, public safety, traffic accident reduction, administrative efficiency and e-government services.

The CCC is equipped with an executive dashboard that provides a comprehensive view of multiple department-level systems and overall performance. Data collated across systems is analyzed to understand activity patterns and abnormal events, provide timely alerts on actionable events and convert them into incidents mapped with configurable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Instant alerts from these systems are critical in monitoring natural contingencies and other disturbances in the city.

Fluentgrid won the prestigious Smart Cities India Award 2017 in the Safe City category, for its benchmark implementation of the CCC. The Actilligence urban technology platform on which the CCC has been implemented stood second with a Special Mention Award in the Best Smart City Platform category at the Smart City Expo India 2018 at Jaipur
