As a first step to revitalizing Visakhapatnam into a smarter and more sustainable city, Fluentgrid Ltd (formerly Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd), in association with Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), has launched a state-of-the-art centralized City Command Center.
IBM, Smart City Council’s lead partner in India, partnering with two other US-based organizations — AECOM and KPMG — has prepared the entire master plan for Vizag Smart City, marking a strong American role in the city’s ambitious plan.
City Command Center Launched
Connecting for the first time multiple city-level services and providers onto a single platform, the newly launched City Command Center in Vizag will immediately usher in smarter and more efficient governance capabilities for GVMC, helping lay the foundation for implementing the city’s Smart City agenda. Interestingly, the Visakhapatnam center, which acts as a headquarters for the state, can be integrated in the future with all cities of Andhra Pradesh.
How it will work
Fluentgrid’s time-tested mPower product suite will set up the entire ICT infrastructure for the command center. The center will display an executive dashboard with KPIs to monitor various department-level dashboards by analyzing data and AV streams emerging from a wide variety of systems.
This data will be analyzed and correlated with data coming from other departments to identify abnormal events, patterns and exceptions, to alert the concerned entities for further action. Any disruption in a city service or process will be reported as an incident which can be resolved as per SLAs.
Dreaming San Francisco
Earlier last year, the Indian government signed agreements with the Obama administration to include Vizag as one amongst the three cities that will be developed as Smart Cities in collaboration with various US government agencies.
Building on this momentum, Vizag also ranked 8th in the 100 Smart Cities Challenge of India. It has an overwhelming 1.5 million citizens contributing to the Smart City plans, to identify various city-level services and issues.
For the larger project where the US agencies are involved, the government authorities have been benchmarking Vizag with San Francisco when it comes to the targeted outcomes. San Francisco was also chosen because of the geographical similarity. Situated in northern California, the city is on the tip of a peninsula, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and a bay. San Francisco is also known for its hilly landscape, among other picturesque places. Vizag, too, has a hilly terrain, with several big formations such as Kailasagiri and Rishikonda overlooking the Bay of Bengal.

Our CSR arm “CitYzen” promotes citizen-centric smart city movement using technology as an enabler.
“Smart Kiralmpudi” pilot project is another one of the many efforts by CitYzen to move in the direction of its long term initiative of striving to foster sustainable and resilient communities for a better society.
As part of Smart Kirlampudi, our Smart Street Light Solutions (SSLS) is designed to act as a central nervous system for all the connected sensor networks. SSLS serves as a data carrier network for Smart meters, Air quality sensors, Wi-Fi connectivity, Surveillance systems and many more Internet of Things (IoT) enabled devices.
SSLS data is routed to the Central Command Centre which gives the complete control to manage each of the integrated devices independently.
LED based lights are fitted to SSLS, which saves energy and is environment friendly. Features like automatic light dimming (based on daylight sensors) and remote operations from command centre, account for improvements in energy conservation.
SSLS comes with a Surveillance Camera integrated with the command centre. The surveillance cameras can be monitored remotely via a live feed.
A programmable LED screen is installed along with SSLS. This serves as a customized message board for the citizens.
To enable the SSLS, Fluentgrid has installed its first solar cum wind energy generation unit. This indigenised system is independent of the grid and is the sole power source for SSLS.
Diagrammatic representation of Smart Street Light Solution:
Benefits from SSLS (current version):
- Self-contained solution – Operations based on automatic daylight sensing and/ or scheduled time
- Environment friendly – 100% powered by solar and wind energy, thereby reducing fossil fuel consumption and eliminating pollution
- 24 X 7 Monitoring – Real time monitoring of the street light via web portal
- Weather proof – High grade luminaire ensures consistent high performance
- Long life – Solar panels with more than 25 years of power generation capacity
- Minimal maintenance for all components
- LED display board for Alerts and/ or Important messages

Phoenix is planning a slew of activities as part of this pilot project under five broad categories viz. Clean, Green, Health, Safe and Digital towards transforming this colony into a model smart community. The portal was inaugurated on the occasion of the pilot project launch earlier this year and a MoU has been signed to this effect between CITYZEN (CSR arm of Phoenix) and Kirlampudi Residents Welfare Association (KRWA).

One of the practices for citizen engagement already in use in Vizag was the online portal www.onevizag.org that has been deployed in the Kirlampudi neighborhood on a pilot basis. This allows the residents to not only interact with one another on matters that concern their neighborhood but also acts as an interface between the Municipal administration and the residents where by several categories of issues can be reported to the civic authorities for further action. This online portal www.onevizag.org is proving to be easy to use and effective tool of communication powered by Phoenix IT Solutions which is the driving force behind the Smart Kirlampudi Pilot Project.

The Hon’ble Minister then shared his knowledge, vision and thoughts of how citizens can and should share the responsibility of developing a city and as the biggest and most involved stakeholders of a city have a right to know and demand information relevant to them. He urged citizens to involve themselves whole-heartedly in city development programs.
Smart cities being the new buzz word and Vizag being shortlisted as one of the cities to be transformed into a smart city, we have been witnessing lot of interest from many sections of the society and media. But, as you know, for a city to be really smart and sustain that momentum, it is important that its citizens play a key role in defining the contours of a smart city. Hence we decided to work with the progressive Kirlampudi Layout to realize a model smart community as a showcase to what works in and for Vizag.
As part of this initiative, we deployed a citizen portal called www.onevizag.org along with technology platform mobile app that will allow the Kirlampudi residents to collaborate and work smartly for the benefit of their community.
The Portal was inaugurated as part of the LET’S GET SMART KIRLAMPUDI initiative, wherein we are proposing to showcase the colony as a smart community. CITYZEN and Kirlampudi Residents Welfare Association (KRWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to launch this initiative.

CITYZEN is the CSR arm of Fluentgrid Limited, which strives to foster sustainable and resilient communities for a better society through people participation. Under the CITYZEN banner, we recently launched Lets Green Vizag, a CSR program aimed at bringing back the green cover of Vizag -lost due to Hudhud cyclone- through active involvement of citizen volunteers. Honorable CM Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu recently launched our tree mapping application (http://onevizag.org/map/) that has been used to capture the species details, location and photographic evidence of nearly 50,000 plants so far. It is the first time in India that so many trees have been geotagged in a city along with photographic evidence. We are in the process of taking the next steps necessary to monitor their wellbeing in a sustainable manner, in coordination with GVMC.
