Vizag’s first women Hackathon on Smart City, supported by Fluentgrid


Girls in Tech Foundation, a Non Governmental Organization  in association with Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and US Embassy, Hyderabad organised the first all women ‘She Builds Tech – Smart City Hackathon’ in Vizag, spanning two days, 19-20 August, 2017. The event was held at Green Park Hotel and was supported by Fluentgrid, IBM, Bayer India and Wave Labs with major focus on collaborative governance, improved accessibility to physical infrastructure, eco-friendly solutions for smart city and Tech Nari – empowering women in technology.

Fluentgrid, one of the sponsors of the event, assisted Girls in Tech Foundation through its Corporate Social Value (CSV) division. On this occasion Mrs. Vani Gannamani, Director, CSV remarked that Fluentgrid believes in impactful technology that reaches every nook and corner, and for the right impact of technology, it is noteworthy to support initiatives like the Smart City Hackathon.

300 students from some of the top universities of AP and Telangana took part in the event. The participants were motivated to build solutions with inputs from corporate mentors. The teams went thorough idea generation session, planning session, coding session and then their final work was brought to the panel of jury on Sunday. Mentors from Fluentgrid limited guided a team from Y S R Engineering College of Yogi Vemana University from Proddatur. ‘Nano Sol’ – a solar energy harnessing paint, a water grid solution, geo fencing, ‘Intelligent Ambi’ – a smart ambulance service and ‘Tour Gel’ were among the winning solutions.

During the inaugural function, the Chief Guest Mr. Y. Sujana Chowdary, Minister of state for Science and Technology & Earth sciences said that Women entrepreneurs should be encouraged to use technology solutions for driving the nation forward.

Phoenix CEO briefs US delegation on Kirlampudi Smart City Pilot Project


Confederation of Indian Industry in partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh organized a one day conference on “Visakhapatnam as a Smart City”.  The conference was attended by the US delegation, state and central government officials and corporates from different parts of the world. A MoU between the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and the US Government has been signed to develop Visakhapatnam as a Smart City. The US companies have also shown keen interest in partnering with Indian companies to transform Visakhapatnam into a smarter city.

Mr. Muralikrishna Gannamani, MD & CEO of Phoenix IT Solutions, briefed the audience about the Smart City Pilot project being implemented by Phoenix at Kirlampudi Colony of Visakhapatnam. He spoke about various initiatives under way like waste segregation at source, direction boards to promote walking, online tree census, online civic issues reporting, upcoming police control room, etc. supported by a citizen engagement portal called . The portal platform with social networking style collaboration and gamification capabilities is seen as the key enabler in engaging with the citizens and making them more proactive. Phoenix is planning a slew of activities as part of this pilot project under five broad categories viz. Clean, Green, Health, Safe and Digital towards transforming this colony into a model smart community. The portal was inaugurated on the occasion of the pilot project launch earlier this year and a MoU has been signed to this effect between CITYZEN (CSR arm of Phoenix) and Kirlampudi Residents Welfare Association (KRWA).

Mr. Murali said that this pilot would serve as the perfect test bed for brownfield smart city projects in Visakhapatnam and elsewhere. He also extended an invitation to smart city technology companies to come and test their wares with an objective to tailor their offerings to suit the specific needs of Visakhapatnam and Indian brownfield cities in general.

GVMC Commissioner Mr Praveen Kumar appreciated the Smart Community initiative of Phoenix and encouraged to pursue the planned initiatives at the earliest. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Giridhar Aramane, Principal Secretary for municipal administration and urban development, said that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) would be formed as a city development corporation to raise funds and implement the ambitious smart city project in Visakhapatnam. The SPV would not only identify sector specific projects but also scout for funding agencies and companies for execution of the projects.

“CITIZEN CONNECT” an interactive workshop


The Honorable Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Sri M. Venkiah Naidu inaugurated CITIZEN CONNECT – an interactive workshop aimed at equipping citizens for engaging in a smart city. The Smart Visakha Forum (SVF), an initiative by the Vizagapatam Chamber of Commerce (VCCI) and Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd as the technology partner, conducted this workshop on Wednesday 8th April 2015 at Hotel Four Points by Sheraton, Visakhapatnam.


The workshop started with a panel discussion on the topic “Citizens contributions & expectations in Smart Governance” by Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) and Government representatives” with GVMC Commissioner Sri Pravin Kumar representing the Government and Residents Welfare Associations (RWA) represented by Mr. Uday Shirname, Mr. Shaji Anand, Mr. Sohan Hatangadi, Mr. AK Pandey, Mr. Ramana, and Prof Lakshmi. Mr. DVVS Somayajulu moderated this panel discussion. This discussion highlighted some of the main issues of health, sanitation, security etc. faced by citizens. The GVMC Commissioner responded with initiatives being implemented by the Government as well as those that were close to implementation. He also addressed the limitations faced by the Government. He reiterated that the guidelines laid down by the government for smart Cities, Citizen engagement and citizen participation in governance were very essential. City Police Commissioner Sri Amit Garg spoke on the various security measures being taken by the Police department. He also mentioned about the success of IT initiatives like iclick and Abhayam.

Next Mr. Praveen Prakash, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development spoke on various aspects of smart city building and various mechanisms that could be adopted by cities wishing to turning smart.

The second panel discussion on “Investment opportunities and challenges and ease of business in Vizag” was moderated by the Bureau Chief of The Hindu newspaper Mr. GS Subrahmanyam with participants Mr. G Shiv Kumar of Maple software, Mr. Neeraj Sarda, Chairman CII, Vizag Chapter, Mr. B Raja Srinivas, ex- chairman CREDAI and Prof Lalitha Rani Mynenei. This panel discussed the various concerns faced by industries including the service tax, CSR funds, Approval mechanisms for industry etc.,

Mr. Kancharla Ramabrahmam , President VCCI gave a short history of the organization after which Mr. Anand Dutt briefly explained the thought and actions that went behind the formation of the Smart Visakha Forum. The Forum is a broad based unified group of representatives from all sections of the Visakhapatnam city that will work towards making the city a better place. Following that Ms. Ramya gave a presentation of various citizen engagement strategies to educate the gathering. One of the practices for citizen engagement already in use in Vizag was the online portal that has been deployed in the Kirlampudi neighborhood on a pilot basis. This allows the residents to not only interact with one another on matters that concern their neighborhood but also acts as an interface between the Municipal administration and the residents where by several categories of issues can be reported to the civic authorities for further action. This online portal is proving to be easy to use and effective tool of communication powered by Phoenix IT Solutions which is the driving force behind the Smart Kirlampudi Pilot Project.

This was followed by the formal inauguration of the workshop by Hon’ble Union Minister for Urban Development Sri Venkiah Naidu by lighting the lamp. The Hon’ble Member of Parliament Dr K Hari Babu then introduced the chief guest and shared his thoughts and vision of Vizag as a smart city.

Sri Venkiah Naidu released a summary of the inputs collected during 12 previous round table sessions with the various stakeholders in the city. This was compiled in the form of a brochure. The Hon’ble Minister then shared his knowledge, vision and thoughts of how citizens can and should share the responsibility of developing a city and as the biggest and most involved stakeholders of a city have a right to know and demand information relevant to them. He urged citizens to involve themselves whole-heartedly in city development programs.

Lets Get Smart Kirlampudi – A citizen centric smart community Initiative


Smart cities being the new buzz word and Vizag being shortlisted as one of the cities to be transformed into a smart city, we have been witnessing lot of interest from many sections of the society and media. But, as you know, for a city to be really smart and sustain that momentum, it is important that its citizens play a key role in defining the contours of a smart city. Hence we decided to work with the progressive Kirlampudi Layout to realize a model smart community as a showcase to what works in and for Vizag.

As part of this initiative, we deployed a citizen portal called along with technology platform mobile app that will allow the Kirlampudi residents to collaborate and work smartly for the benefit of their community.

The Portal was inaugurated as part of the LET’S GET SMART KIRLAMPUDI initiative, wherein we are proposing to showcase the colony as a smart community. CITYZEN and Kirlampudi Residents Welfare Association (KRWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to launch this initiative.

CitYzen ( the CSR arm of Phoenix) conducts competitions for high school students as part of the Visakha Utsav 2015.


The Visakha Utsav 2015 organising committee in association with CitYzen conducted competitions for high school children in classes VIII , IX and X at the Swarna Bharathi indoor stadium on 7th and 8th of Jan 2015.A total of 1568 students participated in seven events spread over the two days.

The event was inaugurated by Minister for HRD for Andhra Pradesh, Sri Ganta Srinivas Rao. Other dignitaries who attended the inauguration included Member of Parliament, Visakhapatnam Dr.K Hari Babu, Members of the Legislative Assembly of Vizag district , Zilla Parishad Chairperson and the VUDA Vice Chairman Sri MV Seshagiri Babu. Chairman Visakhapatnam Port Trust Sri MT Krishna Babu gave away the prizes to the winners .

Day 1 • Elocution in English and Telugu – Means of Energy Conservation to make Vizag a smart City . • Essay Writing in English and Telugu – Ways of reducing waste & effective disposal to make Vizag a Clean city . • Slogan Writing in English and Telugu – What does Visakha Utsav mean to you . • Painting – Imagine a re-greened Vizag and paint it with at least one land mark of Vizag .

Day 2 • Rangoli – Festive Sankranti ( only with white /colour powders) • General Knowledge Quiz – Vizag and United Andhra Pradesh . • Project making Competition – Any area of Vizag .

The school with the maximum number of prize winners will be given trophies for First , Second and third place winners on the concluding day of the Visakha Utsav.

Apart from giving away cash and gift voucher prizes, lunch for all the students and the academic staff was hosted and sponsored by Phoenix IT Solutions. The enthusiastic response by the schools and the festive spirit of the colorful and through provoking competitions made it an enjoyable event for the audience.

Phoenix has co-sponsored as part of it’s CSR initiative this year the One and Only Student selected  from INDIAVisakhapatnam S.Prateek, to realize his dream of being a Global Youth Environmental Ambassador representing India, who is also the second Indian student selected ever by the International Expedition Committee. He will be joining another 80 odd students from all over the world for the Antarctic Youth Expedition starting from December 27th 2013 to 10th Jan. 2014.

The expeditions represent once in a lifetime opportunities for youth to expand their knowledge about the circumpolar world, to gain a global perspective of the Antarctic, it’s wonders, and it’s present and future challenges. One of the key goals of the pioneering project is to “pass the torch” and give the world’s youth a heightened understanding and respect for our planet, and it’s inspiration, knowledge and motivation to protect it.

Team Phoenix participates in “Let’s Vote”


The team from Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd participated in the “Let’s Vote” awareness campaign, a silent walk from Vuda Park to Ramakrishna Beach. The campaign is intended to sensitize the citizens of Vizag about the value of the Vote, their fundamental right.
