Confederation of Indian Industry in partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh organized a one day conference on “Visakhapatnam as a Smart City”.  The conference was attended by the US delegation, state and central government officials and corporates from different parts of the world. A MoU between the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and the US Government has been signed to develop Visakhapatnam as a Smart City. The US companies have also shown keen interest in partnering with Indian companies to transform Visakhapatnam into a smarter city.

Mr. Muralikrishna Gannamani, MD & CEO of Phoenix IT Solutions, briefed the audience about the Smart City Pilot project being implemented by Phoenix at Kirlampudi Colony of Visakhapatnam. He spoke about various initiatives under way like waste segregation at source, direction boards to promote walking, online tree census, online civic issues reporting, upcoming police control room, etc. supported by a citizen engagement portal called . The portal platform with social networking style collaboration and gamification capabilities is seen as the key enabler in engaging with the citizens and making them more proactive. Phoenix is planning a slew of activities as part of this pilot project under five broad categories viz. Clean, Green, Health, Safe and Digital towards transforming this colony into a model smart community. The portal was inaugurated on the occasion of the pilot project launch earlier this year and a MoU has been signed to this effect between CITYZEN (CSR arm of Phoenix) and Kirlampudi Residents Welfare Association (KRWA).

Mr. Murali said that this pilot would serve as the perfect test bed for brownfield smart city projects in Visakhapatnam and elsewhere. He also extended an invitation to smart city technology companies to come and test their wares with an objective to tailor their offerings to suit the specific needs of Visakhapatnam and Indian brownfield cities in general.

GVMC Commissioner Mr Praveen Kumar appreciated the Smart Community initiative of Phoenix and encouraged to pursue the planned initiatives at the earliest. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Giridhar Aramane, Principal Secretary for municipal administration and urban development, said that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) would be formed as a city development corporation to raise funds and implement the ambitious smart city project in Visakhapatnam. The SPV would not only identify sector specific projects but also scout for funding agencies and companies for execution of the projects.
